Girl Scout Council of Greater Long Beach's Volunteer Development Pin Program

Volunteer Development PinThe following explanation of Girl Scout Council of Greater Long Beach's Volunteer Development Pin Program is taken verbatim (except for re-formatting to make it compatible with a web page) from an article in the Leader Express by Harriet, who was then the Director of Program and Training:

Girl Scout Council of Greater Long Beach supplies complimentary volunteer development pins to any registered volunteer who completes one of the three major trainings offered by the Council:

  1. Basic Leadership Training (3 sessions, plus New Leader Orientation)
  2. Troop Camper Training (Level I - Indoor Adventures, II - Outdoor Readiness, and III - Tent Camping)
  3. First Aid/CPR Training (2 sessions)

The pins are given for training given through the Girl Scout Council of Greater Long Beach. BLT and Troop Camper Training must be taken through our council's training department. First Aid/CPR Training from another approved provider may be counted with appropriate documentation. After receiving the pin, volunteers may then purchase the color bar to attach to the pin. These bars are available in the council shop.

  • Green - Basic Leadership Training completion
  • Yellow - Troop Camper completion
  • Red - First Aid/CPR completion
  • Blue - Additional training beyond the major areas (must first have received the Green, Yellow, and Red bars)

The purpose of the blue bar is to recognize registered volunteers who strive to improve their leadership by attending a variety of supplemental trainings which enhance the troop program.

Criteria for earning the blue bar are:
The registered volunteer shall have taken 25 hours of additional Council, National, or other relevant training, such as:
  • Enrichment leadership trainings listed in the Training Guide of the Leader Express
  • Service Team Training/Registrar Training
  • Product Sales Training
  • GSUSA Training (Teleconferences, Macy, regional, etc.)
  • Leader Conferences either at GLBGSC or other Girl Scout Councils (with prior approval)
  • Certain community, professional, or service training with prior approval

Recertification classes such as those for CPR and Troop Camper do not count towards the blue bar. Neither do additional BLT classes taken after first receiving the green bar, retaking the Troop Camper Training, or renewals of Standard First Aid. Trainings count the first time you take them; retaking classes is encouraged, but does not count towards the blue bar. Exception: Fall Product Sales training and Cookie Sales training may each count once. Training for different Service Team positions may each count once. Leader Conferences may count more than once. For questions regarding trainings that require prior approval, please call the Director of Training at the Girl Scout Council of Greater Long Beach offices.

Hours above 25 may be counted toward a second blue bar.

The Red, Yellow, Green, and Blue bar recognitions are part of a Volunteer Recognition program designed and developed by the Girl Scout Council of Greater Long Beach. The GSUSA program is slightly different and is described on page 26 of the Adult Recognitions in Girl Scouting booklet. Volunteers should decide which set of recognitions they wish to receive; it would not be appropriate to count the same hours toward both.

This Award will probably disappear when we merge with the rest of the LA County Councils; if you've earned it, make sure you have it before it's gone!
